St John Lutheran Church in Waverly

ST JOHN BEGINS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

On April 21, St John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa celebrated the first of three special centennial worship services to be held in 2013. The theme for these celebrations is: ONE LORD-ONE FAITH-ONE CENTURY OF GOD’S GRACE.

More than 300 people worshiped at two services lead by Pastor Kris Kincaid, Senior Pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Pastor Kincaid is a son of St John and was confirmed there in 1972. He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly and then attended Concordia Seminary in Fort Wayne Indiana to prepare for the Pastoral ministry, graduating in 1987. He later received a Doctorate of Theology from Concordia Seminary, St Louis Missouri, in 2005.

Dr. Kincaid based his message on Psalm 84:10-“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” Everything changes and he quoted a Greek Proverb which states, “You can’t step into the same river twice”. Pastor Kincaid pointed out how much Waverly had changed since he was a boy – the streets, the businesses etc. However, the word of God had not changed! For 100 years, St John Waverly, Iowa has held fast to the inerrant word of God and believes as those did in 1913: Grace alone, Faith alone and scripture alone. Thanks be to God!

A time of fellowship was enjoyed between services and a lunch was served following the 10:30 service.

St John continues its centennial celebrations in July and October with guest Pastors Ken Lampe, Will Schumacher and Bob Bugbee. Everyone in the district is welcome.
