St. Paul's Lutheran Chapel in Iowa City

Few things say, “Campus ministry” like football, food, and service.

Now when you hear football you’re probably thinking about the Insight Bowl Champion Iowa Hawkeyes and we do too!  However, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Chapel, football also means Luther Bowl; our annual flag football game and what a game it was!  We had offense, defense, trick plays, and only one trip to the hospital.  Sadly, Deaconess Carriker broke her finger during warm-ups, but, being a true Hawkeye, she still played the whole game and managed to hit the training table afterwards.  She looked quite regal as she ate her soup with her pinky extended.

When it comes to food our college students can eat.  Homecoming brought out the hotdogs.  At Luther Bowl it was hamburger soup.  For Thanksgiving we had turkey and all the trimmings.  When school started up in 2011 it was the Welcome Back Chili Supper.  We are proof that when Lutherans gather, food is usually involved.

Of course, there is more to campus ministry than football and food.  There’s worship, study, and service.  Several of our students will be traveling to South Korea this summer to help out with an English summer camp.  This will be a great opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the South Korean culture and reconnect with some of the students who have gone through our International Student Ministry Program.  More importantly, their service will be a blessing to the South Korean churches, giving many of their members and neighbors a chance to practice English with Americans.  It is hoped the students service will allow the area churches to make new contacts in their neighborhoods.
