Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton

On May 20th, Pastor Clarke Frederick retired, and the church held a reception for Pastor and Zoanne following church service. The parish hall was filled to overflowing with well-wishers who wanted to say goodbye. A short slide program retraced Pastor Frederick’s 22 years at Trinity. A number of people reminisced of times with Pastor and the elders presented the Fredericks with a beautiful engraved clock from the church. The Fredericks have settled into their new home in Mason City, IA.
Summer has been very busy for Trinity. The evangelism board  built a float for the local parade with Sunday School children and parents riding. The church played on the parade theme “A Community of Heroes” with banners proclaiming “Jesus isn’t just a hero, He’s our Savior!” and “Our God is an Awesome God!” and playing Christian music throughout the route.  The float was very well received by the parade goers and 600 Christian bracelets were handed out to young people along the route.
Our church also joined 6 other churches in our circuit to have a booth at the Benton County Fair. Families walking by could pick up wooden crosses, pencils, bookmarks and fans. In addition, the churches went together to purchase 300 DVD’s  - “ Road to Emmaus” to give out to interested families for free. Our Thrivent Chapter  helped pay for these DVD’s.
Summer Sunday School ran from June through July. During the summer Hailey Twaites and Emma Voyles achieved their Growing in Christ Pin Awards for learning who Christ was, what He did during His ministry, and the Easter Story from the entrance into Jerusalem through the last supper, trial, death and resurrection.
VBS was held at the end of July. The children took an Amazing Desert Journey and learned that God forgives our sins, provides for our needs, gives us strength to avoid temptation and sent His Son so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life with Him in heaven. Lessons were interwoven with action songs, puppets and crafts. A big hit was that each child got to color their own t-shirt. Vacancy Pastor David Lingard led openings and taught the children about the sanctuary furnishing and liturgy.

On August 5th, Stephen Preus was ordained and installed as our new Pastor. We are very happy to welcome him and his wife, Margaret to our Trinity family.

St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone

It was a very special day here at St. John - Keystone on Sunday, July 22nd when we witnessed a number of baptisms and confirmations all in one day! Baptized were Crisstian Davidson, Charles Davidson Jr., Amber Davidson, Mikaela Hickle, and Desiree Brunssen. Confirmed were Blake Mather, Amber Davidson, Mikaela Hickle, Clayton Kahle, and Desiree Brunssen. Following worship that morning, Kobe and Marina Sindt were baptized privately. The Reverend Richard Osslund (not pictured) officiated at these confirmations and baptisms.

Higher Things

Over the course of four weeks in June and July, more than 45 youth and adults from the IDE participated in TWELVE, the 2012 Higher Things conferences. Higher Things is an RSO of the LCMS and has been putting on conferences, publishing a magazine and daring youth to be Lutheran for 12 years.

Last summer's conferences were held in Winston-Salem, NC at Wake Forest University; Maryville, MO at Northwest Missouri State University; Irvine, CA at Concordia University; and St. Catharines, ON at Brock University/St. Catharines Seminary. Over 1900 people worshipped, worked and played together while learning about the church here and triumphant. The Lord does twelves, or so we heard. Twelve tribes of Israel; twelve apostles; and twelve by twelve by a thousand in Revelation. When the Lord does twelve, the Lord saves.

We also worshipped four times a day with the historic church in the services of Matins, Vespers, Evening Prayer and Compline. As if that couldn't get better, we communed with the church triumphant during a Divine Service to both open and close the conference.

All of the work we did earned us a little free time to play. There were bouncy houses, comedians, scavenger hunts, square dances, trips to the Pacific Ocean and Niagara Falls, and more. No one knows how to have a good time better than Lutheran youth!

The conferences for 2013 will be under the theme of From Above. They will be in Scranton, PA at the University of Scranton; West Lafayette, IN at Purdue University; and Tacoma, WA at Pacific Lutheran University. Check out fromabove2013.org for more information. Registration opens November 1st!

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairfield

Immanuel Lutheran Church's Weekday classes, along with Jefferson County Right to Life (JCRTL) organization, erected crosses representing the 135 lives lost to abortion every hour in the United States. After placing the crosses, JCRTL served walking tacos to the 38 helpers. The confirmation class and adults then heard a speaker from Heartland Pregnancy Center in Ottumwa tell of the work they do to assist in crisis pregnancies. The crosses will be up until November 4th to give witness to the value of each life to our Lord.
