College Hills Lutheran Church in College Hills

Lutheran Student Fellowship and College Hill Lutheran Church members hosted the Black Hawk County Thrivent Financial for Lutherans annual dinner meeting. Sunday, September 28th, at 1 o’clock the students from Brammer Student Center in Cedar Falls were hosts and hostesses serving the two hundred Thrivent members as they enjoyed the sit-down dinner prepared by congregation members. The ham, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, fruit cup, pie and ice cream with all the accompanying condiments traveled from the kitchen to the tables with speed and precision. Thrivent members enjoyed their food and fellowship. Attendance gifts provided by the Thrivent Chapter added to the fun. Oh, yes, the cleanup is something else, lots of dishes to do; but it seems a small effort to return a favor for the support that Thrivent provides for campus ministry. Whether it’s the matching funds grant for the dinner theater to fund the servant event during spring break or the home office support through the Giving Plus program, the support is greatly appreciated. Hosting this meal is one way to say “Thanks”.

German Language Christmas Service

The members of Grace Lutheran Church of DeWitt are hosting a Traditional Christmas Service in the German tongue! On December 21st at 3:00 p.m. German speakers from all over eastern Iowa and western Illinois will gather for this authentic ethnic worship experience. The guest preacher is the Rev Otto A Brillinger who currently serves a German-speaking congregation in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The American Schleswig Holstein Heritage Society Chorus of Davenport, under the direction of Henry Storjohann, will provide special musical selections. After the service there will be a coffee and cake fellowship complete with a secular German Christmas sing-along in Grace Hall. IDE Youth Committee

IDE’s Youth Committee’s Goal: Provide opportunities and resources continually to the congregations of Iowa District East in the development of local programs.

We have been planning or helping plan the activities for the next few events and are excited about what is being offered. The 5^th & 6^th Grade Retreat has always been well received and the activities and fellowship help our youth meet other Christians in our district. Swimming and bowling have been a great source of fun in the past. Along with the activities we always have included a chance to learn about God by delving into his word.

The Senior High Retreat will still be at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca but the date has changed. As we look at the events each year we try to keep some of the same. However, we also like to look at what we can do to make the event something that will keep the youth wanting more. We are excited about the changes we are making. Hope to see you there.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden

Vicar Nickolas Huelsmen was installed this summer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden by the Rev. Victor Young. He is from Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. wayne, IN, has a wife, Joy, and a young child.

A "Vicor" is a seminary student, still attending seminary, on assignment for one year to work with a congregation and Pastor.

Vacation Bible School Mission Project

"Nets" Protection for African Children

Grace Lutheran Church, Waterloo, had an exciting Vacation Bible School from August 4-7 using Friendship Trek material from CPH. The mission project chosen for the VBS was purchasing mosquito nets imbedded with insect repellant to be used over children's beds. Each year thousands of African children die from the bites of mosquitoes carrying malaria. Mosquito nets are a low cost effective way of saving lives. We thank God for the generosity of the children, their families and members of Grace who raised over $350 towards the project. Through Christian Children's Fund, these monies will be used to purchase $7 mosquito nets for children in Mozambique which is on the southeastern coast of Africa.

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon

The women of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon donated a special quilt to Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca for auction at the camp’s Fall Festival! The quilt has a story behind it.

A number of years ago Mary Jocille Wieben, the mother-in-law of long-time member Carla Wieben, began making a quilt. When she went to heaven, Carla received her quilt blocks. However, it was not until recently that members of the St. Paul Priscilla Guild decided to complete the quilt.

Working together, quilters Carla Wieben, Kay Hertzler and Lillian Johnson combined their efforts to produce this beautiful purple and white work of art for the Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca Fall Festival. Applying herself to completing the intricate cross-stitching on each block, Kay worked day after day. Together Lillian and Kay selected the material, Carla cut the material, and Lillian dedicated her time to sewing the blocks. Collectively they marked the quilt and placed it in the quilt frame with a little help from Kay’s husband, Ron.

Over the next weeks the women quilted tirelessly in an endeavor of love for the ministry of Jesus Christ and His wonderful work that takes place at camp. United, the three women worked diligently to complete the project in time. The special quilt has a little pocket on the back containing a note on the history of the quilt and a picture of the women who made it. Mary

We celebrate the excellent ministry being carried on at our camp and give God the glory for his gifts of time and talent!

LHM – Helping In So Many Ways

Did you know that through Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) over $50,000 was given to the IDE flood relief effort? You will have a chance to learn so much more about the helping work of LHM on Sunday, October 26, at 3 PM at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 6621 “C” Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids. The Fall Rally will begin with a Reformation Theme devotion. You will learn how LHM helps women through its “Woman To Woman” radio programs. Hear about the vital work being done through the LHM office in Myanmar to help thousands ravaged by a typhoon. Be informed about the forthcoming nationwide mobilization of Christian men to help build stronger families. All are invited and welcome.

PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY AT UIHC

Since July of 1997, until the past August, I have been a half-time staff chaplain at the University of Iowa Hospitals (UIHC). In this work, I have been supported by congregations, groups, and individuals, ministering to all LCMS and other Lutheran patients and families, and patients referred to me by staff, pastors, and patients’ friends and families. My schedual at the hosptial was Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 1-9PM. I loved the work I was priveledged to do. Yet, due to a recurrence of the cancer I had twenty years ago, as of August 31st, I am no longer at UIHC.

I will continue to serve half-time at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, as I have since July ’97.

I want to thank the Lord for blessings me these past eleven years with this meaningful ministry of serving in His name. I want to thank all of you for your tremendous support: prayers and financial support. I ask for your continued prayers for my health and wellness and for your words of encouragement.

ATTEND 26TH ANNUAL LUTHERAN SUMMER MUSIC ACADEMY & FESTIVAL

The 26th Annual Lutheran Summer Music (LSM) Academy & Festival recently took place at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN in June. LSM is the pinnacle program of the Lutheran Music Program, and is one of the nation's premier summer music training programs for young people.

Kate Heetland of Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt was one of 148 students to participate in the program.

This year, high school age student musicians from 30 states and two foreign countries were selected by audition to spend four weeks participating in a rigorous schedule that included individual primary and secondary instrument or voice lessons, large and small ensembles, musicianship class, electives (including church music, conducting, collegium musicum/early music and jazz and more) as well as daily recitals.

Worship is at the core of the community experience and begins and ends each academy day. Students are served by a faculty roster of 36 educators, all of whom are esteemed practicing professional musicians and teachers from throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

The mission of LSM is to foster musical excellence in a caring community for high school band, orchestra, choral and keyboard students from all faith backgrounds. The organization is committed to strengthening and extending the Church's heritage of excellence in music and the arts, and provides daily opportunities for student worship.

Since its founding in 1982, more than 4,000 students have attended Lutheran Summer Music. Hundreds of these alumni have gone on to careers in music education, church music and performance. LSM 2009 will be June 21 - July 19 on the campus of Luther College in Decorah.

Camp

Flood Relief Volunteers Gather

Volunteers from Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Wisconsin have stayed or will stay at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca while helping our neighbors in Cedar Rapids. Braving high heat and humidity these volunteers eagerly mucked out homes damaged by recent floods. After hours of sifting through rubble and slime, they returned to camp to be refreshed with a swim in the pool, good food, and devotions.

Camp Lutherhaven in Indiana sent the first group of 14 volunteers in June. They were followed by groups of 6 and 10 volunteers from the Northern Illinois District LWML whose trips were organized by Lutheran Church Charities (LCC) of Addison, Illinois. LCC has several other groups scheduled to arrive this fall. Congregations in Nebraska, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Minnesota will send volunteers in September and October. Other relief agencies have inquired about housing groups at your camp. Representatives from the Southern District hurricane relief agency have helped your camp prepare for an influx of volunteers numbering as many as 100 a week for the next six months to two years. These volunteers will have the necessary skills to help rebuild our surrounding flood ravaged communities. Other volunteers will serve in vital support roles. Thousands are needed.
