The 2011 Christmas Pageant was presented on Dec. 4th by the Prince of Peace Sunday School with participation from the Prince of Peace Christian Preschool. The Historical Christmas account was portrayed as two brothers sat in a closet scheming how to get their parents to give them a puppy for Christmas. The pageant was played out as the brothers tried to remember if there was a dog mentioned in Christmas Scriptures to use as leverage with their parents. Both Christmas and Easter were proclaimed through song, hymns, drama, and memorized parts. Everyone enjoyed cookies and treats afterwards.

As far as favorite chapel student events, we may have a tie between Luther Bowl and Nerf War! A couple dozen students, all dressed in black or camo, came out for a night of war, vengeance and fun for the first Nerf War event of the year. Strategically scheduled shortly before finals week, the students brought their own Nerf guns for some good old-fashioned chapel-style stress relief.

Students who are part of the International Student Ministry program at St Paul's Lutheran Chapel not only learn about American culture, but the cultures of other students and families as well.

When you visit the Davenport Lutheran Home, you just might be greeted by 91 year old Orville Stout. You may see him in the dining room or in the Activity Room. You may pass him in the hallway near the nurse's station. Orville can be 'seen chatting with a resident or staff member. In fact, it is hard to enter our Lutheran Home, on any day of the week and not encounter Orville's friendly smile somewhere along the way.

There are currently 88 residents, many of them in their 90's living at the Davenport Lutheran Home, so it is not unusual to encounter one of them in passing. But Orville Stout does not live here. He is not a resident; he is a volunteer. Every single day, for nearly ten years, Orville has been coming to this nursing home to volunteer his time and effort, In the morning he helps the dietary staff clean-up the dining room after breakfast. Then he helps with Activities by accompanying residents to and from the Activity Room, by calling BINGO, and keeping score while the residents enjoy bowling. Orville is the official fingernail polish remover on manicure day and on Sundays he assists the Nurse Aids with seating the residents in the Chapel for the Church Service, After the service Orville helps Pastor Lockie facilitate Social Hour and helps residents back to their rooms.

When asked why he dedicates so much time, Orville says he volunteers at the Davenport Lutheran Home because he enjoys the people. We enjoy you too Orville and we appreciate your dedication and service to our residents. Happy Birthday!

Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids

Members of Bethany Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids took part in a church wide emphasis this Fall. The study by Albert Collver III explored the Biblical basis of the three fold emphasis of The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod- Witness, Mercy and Life Together. These phrases illustrate how the church lives and works together to proclaim the Gospel and to provide for our brothers and sisters in Christ in our congregations, communities and throughout the world.

It all started with a Small Group/Rally Day Kick Off that took place on August 28 in the Family Life Center. People enjoyed plenty of great picnic food from “B-B-Q This!” The fall events were introduced and people were invited to join a small group for the 5 week series that began on Sept. 11. Sermons were preached each Sunday on the lessons which were: Witness; Witness As Confession; Mercy; Life Together; and Witness, Mercy Life Together; small groups met and faith grew!

Sixty three study guides were given to participants and each small group leader had a DVD to show to their group as part of the lesson. Leader Notes were provided in the back of each of the bible study guides making it easy for members to take turns facilitating their small group. FALLEN FIREFIGHTER SUNDAY

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora chose to participate in the 30th Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on Sunday, October 16. For the first time, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation which sponsors the memorial invited churches to participate by ringing their bells in a tribute to the 72 firefighters who died in the line of duty the past year. St. Paul has nine members who are volunteers with the Eldora, New Providence and Steamboat Rock fire departments. Seven of the nine were able to be present for St. Paul's honoring of the fallen. The tribute included the firefighters standing at attention as LC-MS pastor, Rev. James Likens' song, "Warriors of the Flames" was played and then the church bell was rung 72 times and Pastor David Splett offered a prayer of thanksgiving for those whose vocation includes risking their own lives to protect and help us when fire and disasters happen.

What a blessing are the men and women of our congregations who serve the Lord and us through their own commitment to be firefighters and warriors of the flames!

Each of our 119 congregations has been given the Pastoral Office. Through the Pastoral Office Christ Jesus brings to His people the forgiveness of sins. That is distributed through the preaching of the Holy Gospel and by the proper administration of the sacraments (Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and Holy Absolution).
Each of our congregations has been given a mission field to which that Gospel is to be proclaimed. God’s people are called to be the face of Christ Jesus in that mission field. Our Pastor’s are called to be laborers in the harvest fields by faithfully preaching, teaching, and administering the Sacraments.
The next question which looms before each of our congregations is “what should we be doing as a congregation to be the face of Christ in the community in which we exist?” Do we take on a Christ-like attitude that we live our lives as “God’s sent letters” into our mission field? Or maybe we adopt a posture which says, the church building is here and the people should come to us?
The Church is apostolic because Christ Jesus sent the apostles and His Church out into the world. The Church has the authority of Christ Jesus to be His ambassadors to those who are dying and going to hell. The Church (both people and pastor) are claimed and sent to be proclaimers.
Each person in our congregation should be able to state three benefits that they received from being a member of their church. For example: I readily receive the forgiveness of sins in the Divine Service; my church teaches the true Word of God; and my church practices Biblical reconciliation. Each person should also be able to list three things that he appreciates of its pastor(s): For example: He preaches Biblical sermons, properly dividing Law and Gospel; He is faithful in doctrine and practice; and he truly cares about and loves the sheep entrusted to his care.
Sometimes congregations get in a rut. A little time taken to pause, reflect, ponder and plan can help get a congregation focused around the wonderful task of proclaiming Christ Jesus to its community. It is my privilege to serve you as Paul states: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20. As I interact with many congregations who are preparing to extend a Call for a pastor I have noticed a common request on behalf of the congregation. They all want a pastor who is going to reach out with evangelism. I agree that giving witness to the love of Christ is an admirable quality in a pastor. At the same time my question to the congregation is this: "what are you doing to confess the Faith to your neighbor through vocation and life?" The congregation that expects the pastor to do all the work of evangelism is the congregation that does not understand the doctrine of vocation nor the theology of confessing the Faith.
    In 1863 C.F.W. Walther wrote a book called The Form of a Christian Congregation. I recommend this book to all of our members in IDE (available through CPH). In it he spends one chapter on the "Congregations duty to do its share that the Church in general may be established and promoted." He spends half of that chapter talking about the ways a congregation takes the Gospel to those in the community and the world who have no church membership. Walther quotes one of his favorite Lutheran fathers by the name of Conrad Dannhauer. Dannhauer lays out a fourfold approach to confessing the Christian Faith in our vocations. I will address each of these approaches over the next four editions of the IDE Today. The four approaches are Example, Written Word, Witness, and Prayer.
    The first approach is one of Example. Dannhauer writes: The example of a holy life rightly occupies the first place. If that, like a charming perfume, reaches the nose with its sweetness, it easily attracts both eye and ear; but when it spreads an evil smell, it at once repulses. 'Be harmless as doves' (Matt. 10:16), the Lord said at the time when he sent his doves among the hawks that were to be tamed. Keep the serpent in your eyes, but the dove in your heart. From the dove learn the simplicity of the eye which looks straight ahead, without any side glance or misty veil, toward the goal, that is, God. Learn from it true tenderness; if you cannot be without gall, then at least be without horns and teeth. Learn from it the swiftness which it has, moving its wings without noise and pride. Learn from it also its pureness and its abhorrence of all filth, its chastity joined with faith, concord with truth.
    The most effective way to win unbelievers would be to let them see in us the glory of what Christ has taught; to let them know that we do not seek their kingdoms or thirst for their gold or covet their possessions, but that we seek nothing else than their salvation and the glory of Christ. This theology once upon a time subdued both the pride of the philosophers and the invincible scepter of the princes. Without this we would more easily degenerate into Turks and barbarians then that we would draw them to our side.
    The face of God was manifest in the person of Jesus. We have been baptized into the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus (Rom. 6). His face has not only shined upon us but dwells within us by faith. It is the face of Christ that is exemplified through our faces as we interact with our neighbor with the gentle kindness of the dove. Walther would have us believe that Christ is visible to our neighbor through our example of Christian love in our daily lives. God bless us each and every day with opportunity and strength of faith to confess His name to our neighbor.

On the weekend of October 28-30, university students and guests participated in the annual Fall Fling Study Weekend at College Hill Lutheran Church. Students and friends enjoyed square dancing, a hay ride, and a bonfire on Friday evening. The highlight of the weekend was a presentation on Saturday by Rev. Jonathan Fisk, host of the Worldview Everlasting podcast, who taught about Postmodernism, The Resurrection, and Dating. On Sunday, Rev. Fisk described the mission work being done in Philadelphia during Bible study, and was the guest preacher in the Divine Service.

Wow! Beautiful! Fabulous! Awesome!

When I asked the residents of Davenport Lutheran Home what they thought of the remodeling project that is nearing completion, these are the words they used to describe the changes. May 23rd 2011 was the day they began relocating, remodeling and renovating, the residents' rooms and community spaces in this nursing home which is celebrating its fortieth year of providing quality, Christian care to its residents. The ladies I visited with told me that they especially like the new flooring and ceiling in the dining room and the paint and flooring in their rooms.

Planning and fund raising for this project began in 2008. In addition to new paint; the residents rooms now have new walls in the bathroom, an increased number of outlets and new bedspreads. The carpet was replaced in the solarium and administrative offices and new handrails and refinished doors make the hallways look like new. In an effort to enhance the Physical Therapy facilities the therapy room was moved to a larger room in the front of the building, near and outside entrance. The Activity Room was moved to the back of the building, putting it closer to the residents rooms.

Shelly Hopp, Administrator of DLH, said that overall the project went very well. Our Housekeeping and Maintenance staff did a phenomenal job of temporarily relocating residents and then returning them to their finished rooms. There were moments of chaos and confusion, but the residents, their families, staff and visitors have all been very impressed with the process and the outcome. Wow, beautiful, fabulous and awesome indeed!

Fall Festival 2011

Our annual quilt auction fundraiser took place at Fall Festival on October 9th, bringing in over $8,200 for Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca. Auctioneer Tom Sandersfeld led the auction on an incredibly gorgeous Fall afternoon. Nearly 150 people attended to partake in day’s festivities and numerous bidders vied for the opportunity to take home excellent quilts and fine crafts. Fall Festival is moving back to Summer Fest in order to attract more bidders and revenue for the annual auction. Be sure to mark Saturday July 28th, 2012 down on your calendar. FAITH BLIND OUTREACH

It is believed that ninety-five percent of all blind and visually impaired people do not attend church. There are various reasons for this, including lack of transportation, extreme isolation and previous negative church going experiences. In an effort to address these issues, Faith Lutheran Church, Waterloo, has developed Faith Blind Outreach. We have begun serving a lunch to the blind and visually impaired and their caretakers, with intention of learning more about their needs and challenges, and providing an atmosphere of trust and openness so that Christ may be proclaimed. These efforts are already leading to requests to inquiries about membership and opportunities to catechize the unbaptized.

We request your prayers as we go forward, that we might continue to locate, serve and witness to those isolated and separated from the love of Christ.

FAITH REFORMATION PARTY

Faith Lutheran Church, Waterloo held a chili supper and a screening of the Luther film on October 30th. Over seventy people came and dined on delicious homemade chili, and enjoyed the opportunity to view a film depicting our Lutheran heritage with their fellow redeemed. Many in attendance said they learned a great deal they didn't know, and several developed new questions and curiosity about doctrinal positions we hold. It was a great opportunity to celebrate our faith and the deep roots we have in the history of Christendom.

German Language Christmas Service – The members of Grace Lutheran Church of DeWitt, Iowa are happy to be hosting the Fourth German Language Christmas Service. On Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. German speakers from all over eastern Iowa and west central Illinois will gather for this authentic ethnic worship experience. The guest preacher is Dr. Jason Russell Soenksen, Associate Professor of Theology at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. He teaches Hebrew and Greek as well as Bible survey courses. Dr. Soenksen grew up in DeWitt as a member of Grace. He learned German in college and furthered his knowledge of German while studying at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule in Oberursel, Germany, a seminary of our sister church, the SELK. Please note that the entire service will be carried out in German, with English subtitles in the printed worship folder and projected on the screens. English copies of the sermon will also be available.

Grace is excited to welcome back for their fourth performance the Schleswig Holstein Heritage Society Chorus of Davenport, under the direction of Herr Henry Storjohann. After the service all are invited to join in Grace Hall for German refreshments and more good German Christmas music.

Due to the generosity of the people of Iowa District East, other LCMS churches that contributed, private donors, and LCMS Human Care, the Palanga, Lithuania project has now reached its goal for enough funding to finish the inside of the building.

According to Rev. Dr. Darius Petkunas, Pastor of the Palanga Parish, work on the building can continue through the winter season and hopefully can be completed for a July or August Dedication. He states ”the people of the Palanga Parish are deeply thankful to their Christian brothers and sisters who contributed to the support of this project, and for their prayers, and they look forward to the day they can once again worship their Lord Jesus Christ in their own church building and also be able to carry out their Diaconal ministry.”

Iowa District East will continue to raise funds to furnish the rooms in the Diaconal Center and I encourage you to support this wonderful work..

October 9 was an active day FOR LIFE in Waterloo. The Witness of the Crosses was on the lawn at Faith Lutheran Church (the eighth church and/or school to display them this season.)

At 5:00 p.m. Dr. James Lamb, executive director of Lutherans For Life, spoke at the Life Memorial Service to the largest crowd yet for this annual service. He said for every abortion there are 10 victims who have not died. We prayed for those who are wounded by abortion: the mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings and also the doctors and counselors who have been deceived by Satan to see abortion as a solution.

After the service, a spaghetti dinner was served at the church; then a group of people went over to Planned Parenthood in Cedar Falls for a 40 Days for Life Rally. Dr. Lamb spoke there about the tele-med abortions that are performed in Iowa where the woman doesn’t even meet with a Dr., but sees him on the computer via web-cam. He then presses a button to release a pill that begins the abortion process. The mother receives another pill to take at home where she then delivers her dead baby.

Dr. Lamb then encouraged us with a quote from Jean Garton, one of the founders of LFL. “When the Israelites saw Goliath they said, ‘Oh my, he is so big we could never win.’ When David saw Goliath he said, ‘Oh my, he is so big I could never miss.’” David “picked up the gauntlet” in spite of the odds. Dr. Lamb urged us to be like David and “pick up the gauntlet”, accept the challenge to life that this culture of death has thrown down. Then we should “throw down the gauntlet” and challenge others to take a stand for the sacredness of life. And finally we should “run the gauntlet” and challenge ourselves to willingly move forward on a course that will inevitably lead to persecution, conflict and weariness, trusting in God for the final victory.

Iowa Lutheran School Tuition Organization Know the Mission Opportunites are Great!

The ILSTO continues to gather funds for the 2011 year to aid students in our Lutheran schools
for the 2012-13 school year. We hope to reach our goal of $483,700 before December 31, 2011.
Donated funds assist students with tuition expenses who wish to attend a Lutheran school in
Iowa and the donor receives a 65% Iowa state tax credit. This current school year 599 students
are being helped by $550,000 raised in 2010.

Lutheran eduction financing and the make-up of our student bodies has changed drastically in
the last 25 years:
*Most schools now charge tuition
*Many schools non-member enrollment exceeds member enrollment - up to 15% are unchurched
*Families no longer consist of two parent homes.
*The problems that students face because of environment and personal growth can be
overwhelming.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton

Church life at Trinity - Vinton goes on amidst reconstruction

Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton has learned that a little thing like having your roof blown off and the sanctuary damaged doesn’t mean God wants us to hide in a hole until the building is back to normal! The roof has been finished and reconstruction of the sanctuary has been started. The water damage in the ceiling turned out to be more extensive than first thought and the ceiling and insulation have all been taken down and will be replaced. Beams will be refinished. At first we were hoping to be completed by Thanksgiving, now we are hoping to celebrate Christmas in the sanctuary. Meanwhile, the church family is carrying on as usual. Sunday School and TLC Preschool started on their regular dates and are going strong. Families still fill the Parish Hall for services, the choir and bell choir have added to the services, and the children will sing November 13^th. Bible studies, service and social groups and youth groups are active. While we don’t know for sure where the Children’s Christmas Program will be held, practices are schedule to be held beginning this month.

The Genesis Group (confirmation age) had a bowling party at Berry Lanes in Vinton. We had a great time, with the more proficient bowlers helping those who hadn’t bowled before.

The Senior LYF members had “The Amazing GrrRace” competition. Loosely based on the TV show, teams traveled around the Vinton area doing servant events, completing tasks and answering Bible knowledge questions. From helping the Vinton Lutheran Home and Public Library with fall clean-up, to learning to check vital parts of your car or what firefighters do, to answering Bible questions from Pastor Frederick and reciting the Nicene Creed from memory at the Train Depot, to finding and visiting our neighboring LCMS churches in Shellsburg and Garrison, it was a full day of fun for all.

I asked our IDE International Lutheran Laymen’s Executive Board this question, “What do you think about the League putting in a notice in The IDE TODAY blog, stating that we are asking for someone with needed vocational abilities to fulfill some of our needs on a volunteer basis?” Such as a young adult coordinator, media person, League historian etc. In other words any other computer keyboard job that would make information flow better, and create one more willing person who understands the workings of the League. As of October 19,20,21,22, And at a meeting in St. Louis with the governance people (The folks who try to make it work well according to governmental and spiritual/doctrine laws) They now talk like they would like to see the District Boards turn into corporate 503cs. Is this what you would like to see as member/donors to the Lords work in Iowa? Please understand that each congregational Ambassador is your servant to inform you what this great Media arm of the LCMS is …… doing for your congregations and the funding you entrust to keep the Lutheran Hour on our National radio airwaves. The five Zones of our district is where ambassadors receive training to become Zone leaders who eventually aspire to work with us at the District level.

Serve tables - This expression properly denotes "to take care of, or provide for the table, or for the daily needs of a family." It is an expression that properly applies to a steward or a servant. The word "tables" is, however, sometimes used with reference to "money," as being the place where money was kept for the purpose of "exchange, etc.," Matthew 21:12; Matthew 25:27. Here the expression means, therefore, to attend to the pecuniary transactions of the church, and to make the proper distribution for the needs of the poor. We of the LCMS are all asked to serve with the daily vocational skills we use with ease to serve those who need our skills.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Charlotte. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2011 in the Church.

St. Paul Lutheran Celebrates 75th Anniversary

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bennett celebrated its 75th anniversary on September 11th, beginning with a worship service led by the District President, the Rev. Brian Saunders. Following the service a meal was served to all members and guests. Church memorabilia was on display for all to enjoy as they reminisced about the early history of St. Paul.

In the year 1935, the Rev. P.W. Happel, pastor of Zion Lutheran in Wilton, and his congregation agreed to support Candidate Julius Koch to conduct services and Sunday School in nearby Sunbury for a salary of $25.00 a month. The District Mission Board allocated $20.00 a month for automobile expense.

In the spring of 1936, Candidate Koch broadened his outreach and conducted his first service in Bennett in a hall above the post office. Fifty-six people were in attendance and 12 children enrolled in Sunday School. After several months these families determined that a Lutheran congregation should be established. On October 6,1936, a constitution was adopted and all necessary procedures were conducted for the formal organization of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church U.A.C. in Bennett. Rev. Julius Kock was installed as Pastor in November with a salary of $75.00 a month ($40 from the congregation and $35 from Iowa District East).

In 1939 six building lots were purchased for $600, and in 1941 the present church building was dedicated. In 1946 the parsonage was constructed on the church grounds, and a fellowship area was built in 1960. Eight pastors have served St. Paul in its 75 years of ministry: the Rev. Julius Kock 1936-48; the Rev. Ernest Stuempfig 1948-52; the Rev. Edward Beckmann 1952-63; the Rev. Paul Mueller 1964-70; the Rev. Wendell Henkenmeier 1970-75; the Rev. Daniel Ognoskie 1975-99; the Rev. Bruce Miller 1999-04; and the Rev. Timothy Jones 2004 to the present.

The congregation praises God for His blessings during these past 75 years, and takes great comfort in knowing that He will continue to give His Grace in Christ Jesus to the congregation of St. Paul The things of this world may change, but we are assured that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Events included a Welcome Dinner on Monday, Softball and Slop on Friday, and a Downtown Tour of Iowa City on Saturday.

The Welcome Dinner was a wonderful opportunity for the St Paul's community to kick-off the school year and welcome the students, both > new and returning. Not a single piece of fried chicken was left behind.

Softball and Slop, an well-loved annual event anticipated by the students each year, was great fun and offered the students a chance to get to know each other better. When the rain started it got a bit, well, sloppy, but we pushed through until the sun came out again. Game stats? It was a tie! To celebrate our mutual victories, we all > headed over Pastor Mons' home for the slop, although you could hardly call it "slop"! Like the Welcome Dinner, there was LOTS of leftover watermelon. What a night!

On Saturday, the new students were treated to a private walking tour of downtown Iowa City, led by a wise and savvy group of seasoned St Paul's chapelites. We checked out the best places to go for lunch with friends, dinner with parent$, and of course ice cream and gelato.

What a fabulous week!

St. Paul's Chapel and University Center in Iowa City

A Welcome Dinner was held at St Paul's Lutheran Chapel for both American and International students on Monday, August 22nd. We had quite a crowd, and enjoyed mixing and mingling with new and returning students, International Student Ministry volunteers and members of the St Paul's congregation. Please note that we had TONS of watermelon! Nearly all of the new international students and scholars that came to the Welcome Dinner signed up for English conversation classes and partners. A great evening!

Sometimes The Idea Of Change Hurts Like Pulling Teeth

But we are ready -The executive Board of Iowa East Lutheran Laymen’s League met Saturday August 6 and the main topic was the - rebuilding of our Zone leadership. IDE Intl. LLL has five Zones which encompasses 2 or 3 LCMS circuits. It is through these Zone leaders, that each member /donor has representation within the League structure. The members came prepared to announce a new program titled: “On The Road Again” And they would like to visit your congregation in the near future. The main focus of the League is helping congregations in their evangelism efforts and supporting the Lutheran Hour. The new focus is to bring some Workshops to a central zone church, and explain the benefits of having a LHM Ambassador in your congregation.

The board would also like to remind you of the new family Regional Outreach Conferences started this year. The next ROC will be in St. Charles, Illinois (Chicago) . Everyone is invited, say’s our information, and your family may use free time to enjoy the evening at the resort. RESORT - FAMILY - Do you see a picture coming together here? That’s September 9- 10. Registration at 4:00 PM Friday till 7:30 PM Saturday. The family is then free to go home, or spend Sunday in the Chicago area. Here is a new melding of LCMS and LHM speakers who’s main focus is to encourage or explain to LCMS members how to reach those neighbors looking for a church home and why you are LCMS Lutheran.

The next edition of the IDE TODAY has gone to the printer and should be arriving in two weeks. Thank you to everyone who submitted articles and pictures. This marks my 57th issue as Editor.

My favorite picture is on page 15, a companion to the front cover. It shows four or five young campers watching as the horses they are about to ride are prepared. Though you can't see their faces, you can feel their excitement and trepidation rising. The horses must have looked much bigger to them in person then what they were expecting. The good news is that, despite some last moment changes of heart, all went for their ride and all had a great time. (Some day I too hope to ride a horse at Camp IO-DIS-E-CA.)

On August 3rd, a very pleasant evening, 6 riders left Prince of Peace in Coralville and road 8 miles of trails to Napoleon Park on the south side of Iowa City. Picking up another 8 riders, the riding members continued 7 miles south to Hills where they enjoyed a Mexican meal. About half the riders made the return trip.

This event will also include a presentation by nationally recognized author and speaker Dr. Mary Manz Simon. The topic will be Pop Culture Parenting – Parenting in Today’s Digital Society. The presentation will begin promptly at 6:45 PM.

Dr Manz Simon is an award-winning author, national speaker and media personality. Having sold more than 3 million books, written hundreds of magazine articles, conducted numerous media interviews, and since 1994 hosted a short-format radio program, which airs daily on 180 stations, Simon stays on the edge of issues which impact children and their families. Content for her Saturday evening presentation, "Pop Culture Parenting," will be drawn from her professional training as an early childhood educator, insights as a corporate consultant and experiences as a children's market analyst. Dr. Manz Simon has also presented at several LWML National Conventions.

The children’s fun activities will be available the entire duration of the event. There will be a child-care room for parents who wish to attend Dr. Manz Simon’s presentation.

There is no cost for this event or Dr. Manz Simon’s presentation. Children may wish to dress up in their Halloween Costumes.

New Worship for the Deaf in Muscatine

Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf rejoices to announce progress in our work in Muscatine. On May 28, three new members were received into the church by profession of faith and confirmation. Evelyn Powell was confirmed years ago while attending the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, but in the ensuing years has had little opportunity to participate in church. Shirley Green and Lorri Green were newly confirmed into the Lutheran church. All three have been attending monthly Bible studies at Our Savior, Muscatine, which provided the room in which to meet. Rev. Tim Eckert, one of two district missionaries to the deaf, began leading the studies in Oct., 2007. Now that there are confirmed members, deaf worship services with communion will be held every month.

This type of schedule is typical in deaf ministry. The fact that the deaf are scattered throughout numerous communities necessitates a “circuit rider” type of ministry. In Iowa, Rev. Mark Anderson leads Bible study and worship in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Mason City. Rev. Eckert has groups in Davenport, Burlington, Muscatine, and Dubuque. If you know of deaf in any other community who may be interested in Bible study or worship, please contact your missionaries for the deaf at iowaeastdeaf@yahoo.com to inform them of the opportunity.

St. John’s Lutheran Church In Homestead

A joint service was held June 12, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead with her sister congregation, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wellman, to bid farewell to our pastor, Reverend Wayne Woolery. Vacation Bible School closing was also held in the morning service with an inspiring and joy filled presentation. A bountiful potluck dinner was served to a large number, with an open house and an entertaining program in the afternoon. Special guests included Rev. Woolery’s fiancé Ann Kurth, family members, as well as pastors, members, and friends from the IDE Circuit. An Amana wall clock was presented to him by the congregation in appreciation of his faithful work among us for over ten years. Pastor is retiring from fulltime ministry. He and his bride have settled in Aurora, CO where he is exploring opportunities for ministry with the Hispanic population.

Assistant to the District President - Schools

Lutheran education is my passion! This is the result of attending Ebenezer Lutheran School and Lutheran High School Central, St. Louis, and Concordia (when it was RF). In addition to teaching in Lutheran schools in Colorado Springs, CO and Rolla, MO, I was on the Dubuque Lutheran School start up committee, assisted schools as NLSA consultant, worked at the LCMS International Center in the school ministry department, and served as interim principal at Trinity, Davenport. Presently, I am also the Iowa Lutheran School Tuition Organization program manager, a position that has allowed me to get to know the principals and some staff and boards of most of our IDE schools.

My family includes my husband Merle, in his 5th year as a second career pastor, and two married daughters (a CPA and an early childhood teacher at Trinity) who each have two daughters.

I look forward to visiting each of our schools and becoming better acquainted with their triumphs and struggles. We’ll be having principals’ meeting with IDW and a teachers’ conference on October 20-21 in DesMoines.

Please pray for our schools and their staffs that they may become stronger mission outreachers in our communities.

Are our schools mission outposts? Just this past year in a first grade classroom: First grader comes up to the teacher with another boy. “Hey, Mr. J, we’ve gotta get this guy baptized.” About 3 months later “this guy” was baptized.

The Iowa Lutheran School Tuition Organization goal for 2011 is $483,700. For the 2011-12 school year more than 500 students are receiving aid from the $488,000 raised last year. Many of these are hearing about Christ as their Savior for the first time. Each year our schools minister to new families as a direct result of this financial aid. Our schools are our mission outposts for Christ – we see student and parent baptisms, new families worshiping with us. These funds come from giving people as you who see the value of a Christian Lutheran education.

A donor does not have to be a member of one of our churches or a Lutheran. They need to want to give so families might have the option of sending their children to a non-public school, and enjoy the benefits of a 65% state tax credit. Please let your friends and family in Iowa know of this opportunity.

She mentioned it to fellow Ladies Aid members from Trinity Lutheran Church-LCMS, Guttenberg, Iowa during the Iowa East District LWML Fall Retreat at the Camp in September 2010. Trinity Ladies Aid asked permission to adopt Room 7 and held their April meeting at the Camp this spring to gather ideas for the "Good Shepherd Room". Trinity ladies have worked hard to bring their ideas to fruition. Gertrude Brase made reversible covers for the four beds, Karen Riser sewed curtains for the windows, the group met to frame the 12 prints they have chosen to display Psalm 23 and a whimsical puzzle entitled "Jump for Joy" was glued to a backing to be hung on the wall. Helene and her husband Tom painted the ceiling in May.

June 6th, a contingent again made the trip to Camp IoDisECa, this time to complete the refurbishment. Five women on a mission armed with determination, paintbrushes, drop cloths and rags painted the walls of Room 7 and the adjoining bathroom. Two colors of blue and a complimentary green were chosen to bring out the colors in the curtains. After the paint was dry, the prints and the puzzle were hung. Sheep and shepherd's grace the walls with verses of the 23rd Psalm. The final touch was a framed picture hung in the bathroom with the words of John 10:14 - "I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me". Camp Counselors there for training as well as camp personnel were eager to see our finished product. At last they were invited to view the results. One person was heard to say: "If the pastor staying in this room can't sleep - he can count sheep!"

St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne

St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne held VBS on July 25-29. Hometown Nazareth focused on Jesus’ boyhood with daily themes that included “nothing is impossible with God” (Jesus was part of a family and we are part of His family), “I have called you by name” (being named in your baptism), and “serve one another in love” (Jesus serves us at the cross).

Each day’s activities included Bible story time, craft, mission project, music, and snacks. The craft project was a small wooden church that each child assembled and decorated. The mission project was painting a book bag that will be sent to Lutheran school children at our adopted congregation in Migori, Kenya. VBS offerings were directed to disaster relief in the US.

CAMP IO-DIS-E-CA

The Summer of 2011 has been a marvelous one at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca. So much fun has been had playing games, conquering fears, accomplishing goals, and experiencing joy. Though, in the midst all of the fun that was had, campers learned God’s Word is Living and Active! When God says something, it happens. When God speaks, He means what He says. Most importantly, campers learned that the Word made flesh, Jesus, was sent to take away the sins of the world. They learned how God’s Word comes to them today through hearing the Scriptures and receiving the sacraments. Lastly, campers learned that because of the works of Jesus and the gifts He gives, that God’s Word makes them holy and righteous in God’s eyes. God’s Word creates, saves, and makes us holy. You can see the Word of God hasn’t been sitting around, doing nothing. The Word of God is Living and Active!

Higher Things

Over 2000 young people gathered together on the campuses of University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Illinois State University, Bloomington-Normal, IL, and Emory in Atlanta, GA over three weeks in July to worship, work and play with each other. Twelve Iowa District East congregations were represented between the IL and the GA conference.

The theme this year was Coram Deo, which is Latin for Before God. Not only did we learn that Chicks Dig Latin, but we also learned that it is impossible for us to stand Coram Deo on our own. We can only do so with Christ. Pastors Bill Cwirla (Hacienda Heights, CA) and Brent Kuhlman (Murdock, NE) were the plenary speakers. They kept us entertained and catechized us during four one hour sessions. We also were able to choose between over two dozen break away sessions on various topics. Some examples were “Mormonism: Exposed,” “Dating, Relationships and THAT,” “Talking to your non-Lutheran friends about Jesus,” and “Before God in the Liturgy.” To make a good thing better, we all participated in 10 worship services over the course of the week. There was great fun to be had, too! In Las Vegas, an Elvis impersonator entertained the crowd. In IL, there was an amazing Talent Show. And in Atlanta, we saw a hilarious comedian.

Next year’s conferences have been announced. The theme is TWELVE. There will be four conferences and they will be as follows:

Rev. Dr. John Kleinig to Speak on Prayer at Trinity, Cedar Rapids August 21

Save the date! On Sunday, August 21st from 6:00pm to 7:30pm the Rev. Dr. John Kleinig will be stopping in at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids for a special presentation on the topic of Learning to Borrow: The Privilege of Receptive Prayer. He will speak of prayer as a gift from God and that just as Christ intercedes for us, so do we intercede for others through prayer by praying for their needs.

Dr. Kleinig, author of Concordia Publishing House titles such as Grace Upon Grace: Spirituality for Today, Leviticus in the Concordia Commentary series, and Prayer in the Lutheran Spirituality series, istraveling all the way from the Lutheran Church of Australia to share with us some wisdom concerning the riches of prayer. All are invited!

The presentation will take place in the fellowship hall at Trinity (1363 1st Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids) and refreshments will be served. Grace Upon Grace: Spirituality for Today and Lutheran Spirituality: Prayerwill be available for purchase and signing at the event.

Wind Storm Damages Trinity Lutheran Church at Vinton

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

Approximately 4:30 AM on Monday, July 11, 2011, thunder boomed and lightning flashed, then the sound of the wind’s roar woke up the north Benton County community of Vinton, even as the siren began to scream its warning. Even though, or maybe because, the storm didn’t last very long, when people began to leave their basements and went outside the devastation that they saw was a shock. The streets were impassable from trees and debris. Power lines were down. Many homes and businesses were damaged. And the trees… someone estimated that over 2,000 trees in Vinton were destroyed or severely damaged. Straight line winds were estimated at between 110-130 mph.

Trinity Lutheran Church on the outskirts of Vinton was one of the buildings attacked by the storm. A large section of roof was blown away, allowing insulation, rain and debris to drop into the Sanctuary and Sacristy. Water running through the ceiling structure poured in the hallways, our Pastor’s office, and the Sunday Superintendent’s Office. In spite of the impassable streets, lack of electricity and their own damages, by mid-morning church members began to congregate at the church to study the damage and see what could be done to control further damage. Congregational Chairman, Duane Fisher got the okay from the insurance company to have a temporary cover put on the roof. Pastor and other church members removed the paraments and other movable objects from the Sanctuary and Sacristy. Nails and other debris in the parking lot were picked up. The insurance adjuster came and arranged for a Structural Engineer to come to determine if the church’s structure was still sound. Insurance will cover most of the loss. Bids have come in for repairs.

In time, the physical church will be restored. For those members who have seen the damage, emotions are still being dealt with. There is something about having your home or church damaged by weather or other uncontrollable events. I cannot describe the feelings of seeing the altar, pews, organ, even the floors covered with debris and inches of insulation; great yawning holes where once the roof was. But when I saw that the cross in the sanctuary still hung high, I realized that God’s promise that He would always be with us still holds true. The light was shining through the stain glass windows which had also remained intact, and I realized it was not a time to ask “Why?” but to say “Thank you!”

Trinity congregation and the town of Vinton have much to be thankful for — no one from Vinton was killed or seriously injured during the storm; and despite how much damage was done to the trees, most homes were not seriously hurt. Neighbors and strangers offered help; the Red Cross quickly set up a place for those without electricity, church members came together to clean up the outside of the church. We are especially thankful for all the calls and visits from Circuit Pastors and District Administration and churches.

We are able to worship in our Parish hall. It is very healing to be able to gather with our church family in our church to worship. We are thankful that Pastor Frederick was able to go ahead with his scheduled hip surgery and is doing well. The visiting Pastors have given such heartfelt sermons and such Christian love to us. Our Chairman has kept us abreast of the work being done. Sharing this time has made it easier to handle. God has been gracious to us, standing beside us in this time. We look forward to the future here at Trinity.

Benton County Churches Join to Host Benton County Fair Booth

Members from the Evangelism boards of six LCMS churches in Benton County met to discuss the possibility of hosting a booth in the Commerce Building during the Benton County Fair – July 13-17. The churches involved in were: St. Stephens – Atkins; Grace Lutheran – Blairstown; Saint John – Keystone; St. Paul’s – Luzerne, Saint John – Newhall; and Trinity – Vinton.

The first meeting in May was electric with many enthusiastic ideas and comments for the booth. It was decided to have a sign with a map of Benton county with pictures of each church placed on each side of it with strings going from the church to the appropriate city. On the side was a list of the churches by name and city. Also, a stand alone of the LCMS cross was put up.

The purpose being to let people in the county know where they could find LCMS churches and handing out information about those churches plus TLC Preschool (Vinton) and Central Lutheran School (Newhall). Information of our beliefs and other pamphlets were also available.

In addition to the brochures, it was decided to have free copies of older Portals of Prayer for those who wanted them. Dan Hahn of Grace Lutheran suggested a Bible Trivia Quiz – one for children and one for adults. Those that tried to answer the questions received a Tootsie Roll Pop for their efforts. Several congregations suggested that we get silicone bracelets as another give-away. The bracelets were a real hit with young and old. Colored in red, black and white and with the inscription “By Grace Alone… Eph. 2:8-9”, they were packaged with a card explaining what the colors meant and the full scripture verse. Dan Newton of Thrivent supplied pencils and tablets as additional give-aways.

The booth was manned by members of each church in two hour shifts. It was one of the most visited booths in the building, largely because of the warm and friendly welcome of the people who were in the booth. Plans are to continue the booth in future years.

On Sunday, July 17th, St. John Lutheran Church of Denver welcomed three little ones into the church family in Holy Baptism. Following the service, the LWML hosted a "Baby Blessings" shower reception. Coffee, lemonade and cake were served during this time of fellowship. The three families were: Lee and Nicole Akerson family, Ryan and Meagan Reiter family and Eli and Traci Bahrenfuse family.

Our Savior Lutheran Church, Muscatine, Iowa will celebrate its 50th anniversary with the theme of "Our Year of Jubilee in Christ" on Oct. 29-30 with a Saturday evening banquet and a Sunday Service and Festival. The first service was held at the Hotel Muscatine on Oct. 29, 1961, under the direction of the Rev. John B Nieman of Zion Lutheran Church, Wilton. The local congregation was founded through the efforts of Zion Lutheran Church in Wilton and the Iowa District East of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. In July 1962, the Rev. Leo Bruns was called to be the first pastor. He died Dec.25, 1962. He was followed by the Rev. James Kalthoff 1963 - 1966, the Rev David Cloeter 1967-1971, the Rev. Merlin Petersen 1971- 1974, the Rev. Harold Roschke 1976 - 1982, the Rev. Marlin Rempfer 1983 - 1991, the Rev Brian Saunders 1992 - 2009, and the present Pastor, the Rev. Jeffery Paut,z who was installed in 2009.

King of Kings Lutheran Church in Robins

REV. ROLAND NORMAN HISCHKE

(LCMS), 74, of Marion, died Friday, July 22, 2011 at his home. Roland was born October 1, 1936, in Suring, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Martha (Struck) Hischke. He graduated from Suring High School and Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. Rev. Hischke was ordained July 14, 1963. and served The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod until his retirement in 2004. On August 11, 1956, he was united in marriage to Helen Anne Wenger at Kellner, Wisconsin. Helen died November 29, 2008. Rev, Hischke was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his children. Kevin R. (Martha) Hischke of orthglenn. CO. Darrell L. (Karen) Hischke of Wauwatosa, WI, Brian K. ancy) Hischke of Burlington, WI, and Pamela Sue (John) Krog of Central City; 7 grandchildren, Laura, Jacob, Jessica, Zachary. Joshua. Kevin, and Adam; 2 great-grandchildren, Molly Rae and Michael Andrew; and siblings, Margaret Golding, Ruth (Orlyn) Wik, Irm Becher, Martin (Elenore) Hischke, Rev. Waldemar (Anita) Hischke, Mona Pfefferkorn, and Paul (Lynn) Hischke.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and brother, Karl Hischke.
